A Day of Workshops and Fantastic Performances

| | A Day of Workshops and Fantastic Performances | Dear Fellow Vermonter,
This past Saturday, more than 150 Vermont students, from fourth grade to college and from around the state, joined me at Vermont State University Castleton for a day of workshops and rehearsals, followed by a student discussion on the importance of the arts and a choral concert. All the performances were fantastic, showcasing some truly talented young people. Once again, this event reminded me how impressive the young people in our state are. It also reminded me how committed teachers, parents, caregivers and community members are to ensuring young people have opportunities to participate in the arts. | Hearing from students
| During my discussion with the students ahead of the concert, it was clear to me that even the youngest performers understand the value of the arts. They shared how the arts can bring people together across geography, language and other differences. They talked about how performing in a group strengthens listening and focus.
At a time of increasing polarization and division in American society, the arts offer opportunities for collaboration, understanding and inspiration. | Castleton Chamber Singers

| Saturday’s concert would not have been possible without the educators that gave their time. Thank you to Jeff Seabaugh of Thetford Academy, Shoshana Lieberman of Rivendell Academy, Armand Messier of Bellows Free Academy Saint Albans, Julie Freebern from Burr and Burton Academy, and Jodi Sanders of Shelburne Community School. And thank you to Catrina Gallagher for organizing the participation of the Saint Michael’s College Acabellas.
We also appreciated the opportunity to partner again this year with Castleton professor and the evening’s guest conductor, Dr. Sherrill Blodget; workshop leader professor Marisa Valent-Altland; accompanists Charles Madsen and Jamison Baker; and Stefan Billups and Lori Phillips for supporting all the planning and logistics behind the scenes. I also want to thank Castleton students and chamber singers who mentored the younger singers throughout the day. | Singing our state song, These Green Mountains
| Thank you to all the students for participating, parents and caregivers for encouraging their kids in the arts, principals and school administrators who made it possible for these students to take part in the day and every Vermonter who supports the arts in their own communities.
Sincerely,
