Palestine wins in Providence

Dear Luis,   Last night, Providence, RI made history. There, Democrats elected David Morales as their nominee for mayor, making his candidacy the first ever to unseat a sitting mayor in the city. What’s more: Morales is unabashedly pro-Palestine. Morales intertwined justice for Palestinians with a populist program of support for working class Providencians, saying: “The mayor should be more concerned with fighting the affordability crisis in Providence than defending a genocide.” David is our 16th endorsed candidate to win the Democratic nomination this cycle. Our Palestine champions have been winning up and down the ballot – from city government, to state legislature, to the House of Representatives, to the Senate. And we’re just getting started. David has been in the streets with the Palestinian rights movement for years.   Morales won because organizations mobilized grassroots people power to talk with voters across the city — and because his campaign gave people something to vote for. He has consistently called for an end to U.S. support for apartheid and genocide.   During his campaign for mayor, David proudly endorsed an upcoming city ballot initiative to cut an estimated $2.5 million in investments in Israel and other countries committing genocide. This will be the first legally-binding divestment vote in U.S. history. It’s the culmination of months of on-the-ground organizing by JVP-Rhode Island members and partners — and with David as the Democratic nominee for Mayor, we’re that much closer to victory.   Volunteers across Providence made this happen through a powerhouse grassroots field program where neighbors spoke to neighbors about making Providence a city where working people can thrive.   As David said in his victory speech, this win was about more than just one election. “Solidarity was on the ballot….And tonight, Providence, we delivered a mandate.”   “Together we ignored the cynicism. Together we refused to lower our expectations. Together we organized, day in and day out, sharing our vision on how we build a city all our neighbors can afford and feel safe calling home.” In Providence — and in cities across the country — we are showing over and over that organized people can beat money.   We are proud to have endorsed David Morales, further solidifying solidarity with Palestine as a litmus test at every level of government.
