The first legally binding divestment vote in U.S. history.
Dear Luis, This November, Providence voters will decide whether to cut an estimated $2.5 million in investments in Israel and other countries committing genocide. Not the Mayor, and not City Council. It will be the first legally binding divestment vote in U.S. history. JVP-Rhode Island members and the rest of the Providence for Palestine Coalition spent months collecting 10,000 signatures to make this happen. And if this historic ballot measure passes, the Rhode Island campaign will offer a viable model for countless other organizers fighting for divestment in their own cities and states. One in which the people get a direct say in where their tax dollars are spent. In the coming weeks, JVP-Rhode Island will print and send professional mailers to voters in Providence, to urge them to vote YES on this historic ballot measure. Mailers are effective — but pricey. We have until Wednesday to raise $7,000 — that's the printer deadline. If we hit it, that's mailers in 10,000 mailboxes across Providence. That's just 150 people chipping in $50 each. Can you donate what you're able? |
From the smallest state, a huge impact. |
JVP-Rhode Island members and the rest of the Providence for Palestine Coalition spent months collecting over 10,000 signatures demanding a vote on divestment — enough to bypass the City Council and the Mayor and get divestment directly on the ballot this November. This multiracial, intergenerational, multifaith group of organizers is pushing Providence to divest city funds away from countries committing genocide, ethnic cleansing, and apartheid — and reinvest those funds in education, healthcare, and housing here at home. If this historic ballot initiative passes in Rhode Island, it won’t just end an estimated $2.5 million worth of investments in Israel and other countries committing genocide; it will set JVP organizers and partner groups up to do the same in cities and towns across the country. Poll after poll makes it clear that Americans don’t want their tax dollars going toward Israel’s genocide. The vote in Providence can prove that when people have the power to decide where their tax dollars are invested, they will vote to divest from Israel. Let’s let U.S. investments in Israel finally be subject to the democratic control of ordinary, working-class taxpayers. Jason Farbman Digital Director, JVP JVP-Rhode Island P.S. Will you help make divestment in Rhode Island a reality this November? Chip in now to bring the case directly to Providencians, right in their mailboxes. |
