This past March, Palestinian protestor Leqaa Kordia was finally freed from ICE detention following more than a year in custody under horrific conditions.
Thousands of you rallied in support of Leqaa, sending emails, making calls, and taking action to demand her freedom. That pressure and the tireless work of her legal team drew the mass attention to her case necessary to push officials to act and secure her release.
Now, in a new exclusive interview with Adalah Justice Project for The Palestine Connection, Leqaa speaks about her experience in ICE detention, the parallels to life under Israeli occupation, and the moral obligation to speak out even in the face of repression.
She, along with other Columbia protestors including Mahmoud Khalil, was ripped from her community for speaking out against Israel's genocide in Gaza, and placed inside a system that punishes dissent and strips people of their dignity.
In her interview, Leqaa discusses her bond with the women in the Prairieland Detention Facility, the real motivations of her arrest, the realities of life in detention and under occupation, and meaningful ways to support people still imprisoned by ICE.
Leqaa's story highlights the interconnectedness of the struggles for Palestinian liberation and immigrant justice, and shines a light on the abusive conditions experienced by tens of thousands of people currently in ICE detention. It also demonstrates the power we have when we come together to have a real impact on people’s lives and secure important political victories that will impact generations to come.
“Solidarity isn’t about being safe and comfortable. It’s about being brave enough to stand up for the oppressed.” Leqaa Kordia
We hope you will take the time to read her words and let her courage and conviction help power you through the fights for justice that lie ahead.
