Responding to your message

Dear Ms. Casa,

I appreciate hearing your concerns about Leqaa Kordia.

As you know, Leqaa Kordia had been held in a detention facility in Alvarado, Texas, since March 2025, despite not being formally charged with a crime. I am deeply relieved that she was released in March of this year.

While Leqaa might be free for now, we must continue to vigorously protect Americans’ constitutional rights. As we have seen with the detention of Mohsen Mahdawi and the other targeted students, the Administration’s efforts were designed to punish free speech and lawful political activity, rather than to enforce the law or preserve the public safety, national security, or foreign policy interests of the United States.

With your thoughts in mind, I will continue to fight back against the Trump administration’s efforts to weaponize immigration law against those that express views it disagrees with.

Please keep in touch. I look forward to seeing you in Vermont.

Sincerely,

PETER WELCH
United States Senator
